Workers' Comp Safety Education Opportunities

Prevention is the key to good safety performance! One of the underlying principles of the OCA Workers' Compensation Group Rating Program has been to prevent accidents and improve safety standards and practices on ALL member campuses. You are strongly encouraged to check out the information programs below, and use them to educate your faculty and staff to help enhance the safety culture on your campus:

Prevention

Ohio college and university faculty and staff should be aware of the Bureau of Workers’ Compensation’s Division of Safety and Hygiene and the Nine Key Parameters for safety. Utilizing these nine key points will ensure a successful safety and health program on your campus:

1. Visible, active senior management leadership

2. Employee involvement and recognition

3. Medical treatment and return-to-work practices

4. Communication

5. Safety and health process coordination

6. Written orientation and training plans

7. Written and communicated safe work practices

8. Written safety and health policy

9. Recordkeeping and data analysis

We’re in the business of education, so it should be no surprise that we strongly encourage you to attend and send campus staff and department leaders to ongoing BWC and OCA educational safety and training programs:

2009 State Fund Seminars  
2009 State Fund Seminars will be presented by CompManagement, Inc. (our third party administrator for the OCA Workers’ Comp. Group Rating Programs). Highly recommended for Workers’ Comp. Coordinators, Safety Directors, Human Resource and Administrative specialists, these programs will be offered at various locations throughout Ohio during April. Watch your email and this space for additional information on these excellent seminars.

 

Safety & Health Classes for Ohio Workers  
Dozens of training courses are available through BWC’s Division of Safety & Hygiene.  These courses are offered through the training center in Pickerington at the Ohio Center for Occupational Safety and Health (OCOSH) and at branch sites and BWC service offices across the state, including Toledo, Cincinnati, Canton, Cambridge, Portsmouth, Youngstown and Cleveland. Employers may enroll any number of employees at no additional cost. Web-based training classes are also available. 2009 OCA Workers' Compensation Safety Seminar  
The Ohio College Association in cooperation with CompManagement, Inc. will offer the 2009 Workers' Compensation Safety Seminar for all OCA member faculty and staff in Columbus on April 30, 2009. This informative seminar will be provided by BWC safety consultants and will cover topics, issues, and needs that have been identified for and by our OCA member institutions.


Register now. Safety Directors, Human Resource and Administrative personnel are highly encouraged to participate.

10:30 AM Welcome, Introductions, WC Program Overview
10:45 AM Session I: Effective Safety Teams You will learn how to outline a process to develop or improve a team within your organization; how a team functions and to to measure its effectiveness; how to involve employees in the team building process; how to define team roles and responsibilities; tools and skills for group problem solving and decision making.
12:45 PM Lunch
1:30 PM Session II:  Ergonomics — You will learn a basic awareness or ergonomic applications in the workplace; ergonomic risk factors; basic control measures and design principles as they relate to risk factors; how to sell ergonomics to the whole organization; regulatory information and applicable ergonomic guidelines.
2:30  PM Break
2:45 PM Session III:  Safety Trend Analysis —  You will learn what types of injuries are occurring at college workplaces and what you can do to prevent them. You will also have an overview of the many resources available on the BWC web site and receive tips on how to easily navigate through the system to find what you need.

The CompManagement facility is conveniently located just off I-270 in Dublin (on the northwest edge of Columbus) and offers free parking for all attendees.
